November 2013 TKGV Meeting Minutes

The president opened the October 2013 meeting by welcoming three newcomers, and extending birthday wishes to Guild members celebrating November birthdays. The October 2013 meeting minutes were approved. The president reminded Guild members to pay their annual membership dues by the end of December. On behalf of the treasurer, the president reported the guild’s balance as $6487.00 prior to payment of recent expenses. The president is hosting a charity knit- in on Sunday, Nov 10 at her residence from 1-5pm. Please contact the president if you wish to attend. Please bring your own needles, sizes 8 to 9. The group will focus on items for St. Mary’s. Please remember to fill in the charity gift log when you knit gifts for charity. Yarn Shop news: Baa Baa Sheep: There’s still room for more knitters to attend the unfinished project lock-in at the shop on Friday, Nov 8th from 8pm to 1am. There’s a Yarn Tasting event on Tuesday, Nov 12, from 6:30 – 8PM. Class size is limited. If more knitters are interested, Roz will hold another Yarn Tasting on Nov 19. Check the shop’s website and Ravelry page for more details. Yarn Club: This month’s contest is mittens, socks, and hand warmers. Use the new “Done Roving” yarn for your projects and receive extra points towards a prize. Also new at the shop is Squoosh Yarn. Many patterns and books are 30% off. Check the shop’s website and Ravelry page for more details. The TKGV knitting retreat being held Mar 6 – 9 in Corolla, NC was discussed. Classes will be detailed on the enrollment and finalized based on number of knitters enrolled in the class. A new thread will be opened on Ravelry for submission of photos for the contest to choose the yarn colors. The president discussed her tour of St. Mary’s. The December 2013 meeting will be held there, with the Guild providing a main dish, and members signing up to bring side dishes. We must meet at the lobby to be escorted back into the facility. If you wish to come early to help set up and decorate, meet in the lobby at 6PM. You may donate table decorations. In addition to the knitted items, donations may include gift cards to local restaurants, and personal items such as hair accessories and nail polish for girls. Wear your ugly Christmas sweater / sweatshirt / vest for the Ugliest Christmas Sweater contest. The Guild members decided to open our 2013 News Year’s resolutions during the January 2014 meeting. Sue Von Ohlsen demonstrated her special technique for finishing off the final bound off stitch in circular knitting. She also recognized the president for her service with a thank you gift. The Guild held the raffle, and enjoyed show and tell. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:42 pm.

October 2013 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the October 2013 meeting at 7:12 p.m. by extending birthday wishes to guild members celebrating October birthdays.

The September 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the guild’s balance as of this meeting is $5,344.90 and noted several expenses are pending receipt.

The president advised she will hold a charity knit-in on Sunday, 11/10, at her residence, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please contact the president if you want to attend.  The group will focus on items for St. Mary’s. 

A member thanked the group for the 2 bags of scarves for St. Andrews Episcopal Church’s homeless project.  Additional scarves will be collected at the November meeting (scarves for homeless adults made in washable, dark yarn). 

The president requested members send book reviews and other news items to the newsletter chair by the 15th of each month.


Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep:  is participating the Ghent Business “Masquerade at Dark” on Friday, 10/25.  She will have party on this date from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. New yarns continue to arrive at the shop.

The Yarn Club:  Please see The Yarn Club’s website and Raverly page for current contests and classes.  New yarns from independent hand dyers continue to arrive at the shop. 

The president announced the Chesapeake Waterways Festival is Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.  Please contact the president to volunteer at the guild’s booth.

The vice-president advised the classes taught by Nancy Shoyer on Saturday, November 2 are full.  There is room for additional participants in the Sunday, 11/3 drop spindle class.  The class homework assignment is available for the Fair Isle class. 

The president advised the guild will hold a knitting retreat at Corolla, N.C. March 6 through March 9.  The president is seeking guild members to volunteer at the retreat and to volunteer for the planning committee.  There will be a planning meeting on October 18.  Please contact the president if you want to participate in the 10/18 meeting. 

The president recognized the entire board for their work in the past year.

The secretary presented the following slate of candidates for the 2014 TKGV Board:
          President:  Debbie Henderson
          Vice President:  Lora Marin
          Secretary:  Debbie Goodman
          Treasurer:  Beverly Boler.

Upon a second on the motion to elect the above candidates for the 2014 TKGV Board, the guild voted unanimously to accept this slate of candidates.  The slate was installed. 

The president advised the winner of the knitting contest and advised 9 guild members submitted 34 entries.  The judges reviewed the entries for yarn choice, technical merit, execution of design, degree of difficulty and overall appearance. 

The guild enjoyed the show and tell, followed by the raffle and a celebration of the guild’s anniversary.

September 2013 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the September 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. with our welcome chairperson introducing our visitor. The president extended birthday wishes to guild members celebrating September birthdays. The August 2013 meeting minutes were approved. The treasurer reported the guild’s balance as of this meeting is $4,374.90 and noted at least one bill is pending receipt. The vice president confirmed Nancy Shroyer will teach 2 classes on Saturday, November 2, 2013. The class topics are “Dealing with Color” and “Fair Isle and Intarsia Knitting”. In addition, Ms. Shroyer will teach a class on drop spindle on Sunday, November 3, 2013. The class fee for guild members is $35.00 per class. The vice president advised the classes are filling quickly and recommends guild members interested in the classes submit their class registration as soon as possible. The charity chair extended a thank you to guild members for charity knitting. In addition, there was yarn for baby blankets for the Navy Marine Relief Society (they need 36” by 36” blankets) and additional yarn for other projects. A member will collect scarves for St. Andrews Episcopal Church for the homeless. The church needs the scarves by the November meeting and requests scarves be made in dark, washable yarn. The president extended a thank you to the newsletter chair for her graciousness in putting together the September newsletter at the last minute. Yarn Shop News: Baa Baa Sheep: has celebrated its’ first year anniversary. Roz thanked the guild for participation in the shop’s August shawl contest. She received glowing reviews of the shawl display. Roz announced the shawl contest and anniversary drawing winners. The Knitting Corner: will close on September 28, 2013. All items, including fixtures, are on sale. The Yarn Club: All summer yarns are on sale 30 to 40% off. Please see The Yarn Club’s website and Raverly page for current contests and classes. The secretary requested nominations from the floor. Having received no nominations, the 2014 TKGV Board of Directors candidates are as listed above. The guild will vote on the board at the October meeting. Cindy McCall, Lora Marin, Debbie Henderson and Sue Von Ohlsen presented the program by providing round robin segments of 4 different methods for joining yarn, to include the Russian join, the magic knot, the braided join and the weaving join. The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various items. The Ways and Means committee is conducting a super raffle of a TKGV Guild bag full of beautiful yarns in project quantities and yarn detergent. Please see the newsletter for further details on the super raffle. The guild enjoyed the show and tell. The October program will have the 2014 TKGV Board of Directors election, the installation of officers, the guild’s anniversary celebration and the presentation of the 2013 TKGV Knitting Contest winners. August Meeting Minutes

The president opened the August 2013 meeting at 7:16 p.m. and extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating August birthdays. The Welcome Chairperson welcomed our new member. The July 2013 meeting minutes were approved. The treasurer reported the guild’s balance as of this meeting is $4,374.90 and noted at least one bill is pending receipt. The guild enjoyed a dolphin citing. The vice president reminded the guild of the TKGV Knitting Contest. Rules and submission guidelines are posted on the TKGV blog, the TKGV Facebook page and in the TKGV Ravelry group. The vice president confirmed Nancy Shroyer will teach 2 classes on Saturday, November 2, 2013. The classes will be “Dealing with Color” and “Fair Isle and Intarsia Knitting. The class fee for guild members is $35.00 per class. If there is sufficient interest, Ms. Shroyer will teach a drop spindle class on Sunday, November 3, 2013. The charity chair extended a thank you to guild members for charity knitting. Twenty one members have contributed knitted items to 16 charities. The newsletter chair seeks articles and reminded the guild of the submission deadline of the 15th of each month. Yarn Shop News: Baa Baa Sheep: ss conducting a shawl contest in August and will celebrate its’ first anniversary on Tuesday, August 27 with a reception from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The shop has a group on Ravelry. Classes and KAL’s can be found in the Ravelry group. The Yarn Club: has received kits to knit bracelets and necklaces, as well as the “Zoom Loom” and kits to make farm animals from roving. Freza yarn is in stock now. The store will offer help clinics on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Knitting Corner: has buttons on sale as well as all books and patterns are 20% regular price. The president announced the Chesapeake Waterways Festival is Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13. We will need guild members to participate in the TKGV booth. The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various items. The vice president led the program on the tab cast on for shawls and offered several tips for making the tab cast on easier to complete. The guild enjoyed the show and tell. The September program will be different methods for joining yarns. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

July 2012 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the July 2013 meeting at 7:12 p.m. and extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating July birthdays.  The Welcome Chairperson welcomed our guests and new members.

The June 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the guild’s balance as of this meeting is 4,240.00.

The vice president reminded the guild of the TKGV Shoulders Bags available for $20.00 each.  They are great for the beach, for knitting projects and for fiber festival trips.  In addition, the vice president reminded the guild she is available for assistance with knitting questions from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. before every guild meeting. 

The charity chair advised 20 members have contributed knitted items to various charities and yarn was available from Baa Baa Sheep, as well as the Navy Marine Society, for charity knitting projects. 

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep:  is participating in the Virginia Yarn Club program this summer.  Please contact the shop for more details.  The shop is sponsoring a shawl contest in August, 2013.  Shop customers will vote on the best shawls on display in the shop.  The top 3 winners will receive gift certificates to the shop.  The shop has new yarns and will host a Malagabrio trunk show. 

The Yarn Club:  The shop has a double stamp program in July.  Customers redeeming a full card of stamps receive 15% off an entire order.  The shop will receive new yarns and has a lot of yarns at 30% off to make room for the new yarns.

Katie Gerwien led the program on yarn storage methods.

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various donated items.  

The guild enjoyed the show and tell. 

The August program will be a demonstration of the tab cast on method for shawls.  Please bring needles and yarn for the demonstration.
